The tank was developed in 1944. In order to increase the strength of the armor, it was decided to completely redesign the hull and turret shape of its predecessor, the IS-2 tank. As a result, the IS-3 received a characteristic triangular nose section and a cast hemispherical turret. The first batch of IS-3 tanks was ready in May 1945.
