Named after a Northern Army general during the American Civil War, the M4 Sherman tank was the main tank of the US Army during World War II. M4 Sherman tanks began arriving in the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease at the end of 1943. Reliable and maneuverable, the Shermans were also quite technologically advanced. Its diesel version, the M4A2, became the most widely produced foreign-made medium tank used by the Red Army. The main armament was the American 75 mm M3 L/37.5 tank gun. Among Soviet tankers, this tank was nicknamed emcha (from M4). During the Second World War, the Red Army received about 2,007 tanks.
