The game takes place in Japan during the Sengoku period - at the end of the 16th century; while Sekiro combines historical, fantasy and folklore elements. According to the plot of the game, in the past, a warlord named Isshin Ashina conquered vast lands, now known as the territory of the Ashina clan; the clan is currently led by the young Genichiro Ashina. At the same time, the wandering shinobi Owl picked up and adopted an orphan, whom he gave the nickname Wolf. Twenty years later, the Ashina clan is on the verge of collapse. The clan's enemies are steadily approaching from all sides. Desperate to find a way to prevent his clan's downfall, Isshin's grandson Genichiro Ashina captures Kuro's Divine Heir, hoping to use his blood, which contains a certain power called "Dragon Legacy", to create an immortal army. The wolf, who has become a full-fledged shinobi and Kuro's personal bodyguard, tries to prevent this, but in a fight with Genichiro, he is defeated and loses his left arm. The surviving Wolf wakes up in an abandoned temple, where he meets the Carver, a former shinobi who now carves Buddha statues. The Carver replaces Wolf's missing arm with a complex prosthetic arm that can operate a variety of gadgets and weapons. His name - Sekiro, which means "One-armed Wolf" - Wolf receives from Isshin in the guise of Tengu. With this prosthesis, the Wolf attacks Ashina Castle and again confronts Genichiro, defeating him. Despite being able to leave Ashina Castle for good, Kuro decides to stay and perform the Immortal Severing ritual, which will destroy the Dragon Legacy and prevent anyone else from fighting for him in order to gain immortality. The wolf reluctantly agrees to help Kuro and travels to the areas surrounding the castle to collect all the necessary components to perform the ritual. Upon his return, he meets Owl, his adoptive father, who was previously considered dead. Owl says he also wants the Dragon Legacy and orders Wolf to give up his allegiance to Kuro. Next comes the branching of the plot. If the Wolf decides to abandon his allegiance to Kuro, then he has to fight with the healer Emma and the elderly Isshin. After their death, Owl boasts that now nothing is holding him back from capturing Japan, but the Wolf kills Owl with a stab in the back. Kuro, seeing this, realizes that the Wolf has become a victim of his bloodlust and a being known as Sura. Subsequently, the Wolf will slaughter almost the entire population of Ashina, and many years later, rumors of a demon will circulate in the country.
