The disturbing sound effect that comes from the material of which the cabinet is made, mainly aluminum, arises from its mechanical resonance. To eliminate this sonic distortion, the challenge was to keep the use of aluminum in the cabinet to the absolute minimum necessary to ensure adequate cooling. The Aavik RIAA section of the Aavik R-180 is based on discrete, balanced, ultra-low noise bipolar input circuitry. The topology of the moving coil cartridge is a floating symmetrical signal generator. Aavik retained this topology throughout the entire phono stage. The input circuit allows the use of ultra-low noise bipolar transistors. By paralleling several pairs of transistors, the company has created a completely silent input section. The phono stage has a gain of 62 dB, and the cartridge load is adjustable from 50 ohms to 5 ohms. The signal-to-noise ratio is 94 dB when measured at 1 kHz.
