- description: Brachypelma Smitty. Brachypelma smithi. Mexican red-knee tarantula. One of the most popular types of tarantula living at home. The spider gained its popularity due to its peaceful disposition, impressive size, colorful color and unpretentiousness in content. It is considered an ideal "first spider" for beginner terrariumists. The color of this tarantula is impressive and fascinating: dark brown, in places almost black with a sheen. On the legs there are bright red or orange blotches, and white or yellow edging is also possible, which gives the final touch to the luxurious appearance of the spider. With each subsequent molt, the color of the spider becomes more and more expressive - the dark areas are closer to black, and the areas with red color increase the degree of red. The body is covered with thick hairs of light pink or brown color. The size of an adult can be 7.5-8 cm, and the paw span is 15-16 cm. At the same time, the spider has a very calm character, rarely shows aggression, moves slowly and smoothly. The toxin is not dangerous to humans. This sympathizer bites very rarely. Smitty's brachypelms grow extremely slowly: males reach sexual maturity by about 2-3 years, and females by 4-5. But these spiders live for a long time. Females have a rather long lifespan of up to 20 years or more. During the molting period, which occurs throughout the life of the tarantula, its active growth and development is observed. At the onset of this period, there is: a decrease in appetite up to a complete refusal of food; the spider becomes inactive; the fleecy cover darkens. The preparation process itself, as well as the duration of the period after molting, range from one to 24 weeks. The molt itself takes about 20 minutes, after which the tarantula lies on its mat upside down with its paws or on its side. They love a humid, tropical climate. As a refuge, they use voids under the roots of trees or dig holes in which they spend most of their time. the bottom of the terrarium (3-4 cm or more), in which the spider can dig a cave or purchase ready-made processed tree branches in which the spider will be comfortable and comfortable. Optimal temperature: + 24-28 degrees Celsius. Air humidity should be: 70-80%. To maintain the required level of humidity, the substrate is sprayed, but you should not do this too abundantly and often. But since this is a desert species, they can also tolerate lower air humidity, although it is noted that at the same time, the color of the spiders is not so saturated. If necessary, the tarantula’s dwelling is equipped with an additional heating device. You can’t leave the spider in direct sunlight! predators that feed on small insects and vertebrates. In addition to the fact that the spider has exceptional vision, they also feel well any vibration in the air, as well as various, even the faintest odors. Adults should be fed 1-2 times a week. Spiders of younger ages can feed every 2-3 days. The following types of insects are ideal for feeding the tarantula at home: banana crickets, tiny mealworms, small marble cockroaches. When Smithy reaches sexual maturity, you can add to the diet: large cockroaches, at least three crickets at a meal, a newborn mouse. harm to their health. Mating and getting offspring in this species is not very difficult, spiders mate successfully in captivity and give abundant offspring. The only thing is that females can be quite aggressive towards males and will not infrequently devour their partners before/after mating. In one cocoon, there can be from 600 to 1000 eggs. The incubation period is about 90 days. Ideal for both beginners and exotic lovers with many years of experience. Born and raised in a private nursery. There are terrariums,
